Hi, my name is Allyson Evans Moore, creator of Backyard Beets. I am a molecular biologist by training, but my passion is growing, harvesting, preparing and preserving delicious food from my backyard to feed my family of four. For the past fifteen years I have worked as the Editor of an international biomedical research journal focused on metabolic health. Incredible, lifesaving drugs have been recently developed and show strong effects on treating obesity and its related comorbidities. But these therapeutics fail to get at one main root of our nation’s health problems…..access to, and learned desire to eat healthy, locally grown food. I believe that everyone should have access to a space and opportunity to learn to grow their own food. Thus, the mission of Backyard Beets….to bring a kitchen garden to every backyard!
A gorgeous and functional kitchen garden can be a place of respite and re-energization. The plants we grow in the garden seem free and wild, sometimes seeming to grow without direction. But up close, their structure is precise, geometrical and highly organized. I love to bring these two dichotomies of wild yet organized into my raised bed and planting plan designs. A beautifully designed kitchen garden can define and accentuate your outdoor space, and as the seasons progress, it brings movement, energy and whimsy as well.
